Takhat Sach Khand in Nanded, India sits on the ashes of Guru Gobind Singh’s funeral pyre. There are many stories about the style and manner of Guru Gobind Singh’s passing. Some are fantastical – stating that he dressed himself in full regalia and rode his horse straight into the flames, proceeding through the fire on a beam of light that took him to the Heavens. Other retellings of the Guru’s passing are more mundane. But one thing is apparent to me from my own experience. There, at Takhat Sach Khand, the veils between the words are very thin. Guru Gobind Singh’s presence is palpable in the air. An eternal, loving fatherly embrace that follows you wherever you go. Being there is like being on the doorstep of Heaven – and seeing the Guru’s deathless face waiting for you, watching you, encouraging you home.
That was my overwhelming experience traveling to Hazur Sahib with our International Khalsa Council to honor and commemorate the 300th Anniversary of Guru Gobind’s Singh death, and his bestowing the eternal Guruship upon the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. The events during our time there, the presentations and official functions were moments that had their impact and purpose. But the Light of Guru Gobind Singh, his consciousness as a Teacher and a Master were infused into every molecule of that place. And it is the memory of experiencing that Light which has stayed with me. Hazur Sahib is a profound reminder that Guru Gobind Singh was real – he lived, he fought and he taught. And it is proof that he is real, still. He lives, still. And he still watches with care the legacy of the Shabad Guru and Guru Panth that he left behind.
There is so much to tell – too much to try to express in a few paragraphs. I kept an audio journal of the trip, and invite you, when you have the time, to listen to the stories and the sounds captured during the yatra to Hazur Sahib.
