A Truthful Path of Living

Sardarni Guru Amrit Kaur

Truth is a hallmark virtue for anyone walking the path of Dharma because it keeps us real and dispels the veils of illusion that would otherwise bind us in life.  That is why Guru Nanak starts Japji with the Mul Mantra by acknowledging there is only one Creator, then saying His name is Truth, Sat Nam.  “Ek Ong Kar: there is one Creator, Sat Nam: Truth is his name.”  Then he ends the Mul Mantra with “Aad Sach, Jugaad Sach, Heibhee Sach, Naanak Hosee Bhee Sach: In the beginning it was truth, through all time it is true, now it is true, Nanak true it shall ever be.”  The seed principle in the Mul Mantra is Truth.  It is Truth which guides the entire creation in the grace of God’s Will. We say “Sat Nam” which means Truth is the identity prevailing in the nature of all.  So we use this expression to salute each moment in Truth.   Understanding  Truth to be our core and shared identity removes the veils of illusion and yokes us to our destiny in alignment with our Divinity.

Ek Ong Kar, Sat Nam, Siri Wahe Guru honors the blessing we experience as Sikhs when we walk upon this path of Truth. The three pillars for walking upon the path of Dharma in a truthful way are Kirat Karna, Vand Chakna and Nam Japna. Kirat Karna means truthfully living in our purity to earn righteously through our own efforts. Then to share our abundance and talents with others is Vand Chakna.  Nam Japna means Simran or the remembrance of God’s name.

The Siri Singh Sahib would say: “Your truth should be so pure that it lifts a person’s soul to the heights.”
So when you walk on the path of Truth, give yourself fully to Truth and live in God’s Will.
