Japji Sahib – 20th Pauree

20th Pauree

When the monsters are nipping at your heels, the Twentieth Pauree wipes away all your sins.

In the 20th Pauree, Guru Nanak draws a beautiful comparison between our bodies and our consciousness. He tells us that when our bodies become soiled with dirt and dust and our clothes stained with urine, these can be cleaned with water and soap. Just this way, the mind also becomes stained and adulterated by negative thoughts and behavior. Nanak tells us that the only way that the mind can be cleansed of those stains is with the love of the Naam, the Word (…) He is instructing us that when the mind vibrates at the frequency of the Naam, it is as though it becomes saturated and dyed that color.

Meditation and chanting must be done with love and devotion, not just mindless habit. And so Guru advises us: Punnee paapee aakhan naaeh. Kar kar karnaa likh lai jaaho. “Virtue and vice do not come by mere words; it is when actions are repeated, again and again, that they are engraved on the soul.” It is the actions of the individual that determine not only the qualities of the personality, but the virtues of the soul.

Everybody who is on this planet in finite form has to experience Infinity. Knowing the Infinity won’t work; you have to experience it. The finite consciousness must merge in the Infinity. Then the cycle of the birth and death will cease. Fear will go away. Sacrifice and service will prevail. Selflessness will be experienced in the self.

~ Siri Singh Sahib – December 22, 1972

Our deeds leave behind an impression on our mental structure and if the same actions are repeated over and over, that impression gets deepened and etched into our nature. The law of karma works uninterrupted and if our actions are harmful there is no escape from the cycle of cause and effect. But we are not at all helpless and can free ourselves from this cycle regardless of the severity of our misdeeds. Spiritual effort, when performed with sincerity, can purify the mind and invite Divine Grace into our lives. Through our own free will and spiritual effort, human beings can acquire divine knowledge, act with kindness, and cancel the bad deeds of the past.

20th Pauree

Bharee-ai hath pair tan dayh. Paannee dhotai utras khayh.

Moot paleetee kaparr ho-ei. Day saaboonn la-ee-ai oho dho-ei.

Bharee-ai mat paapaa kai sang. Oho dhopai naavai kai rang.

Punnee paapee aakhann naa-eh. Kar kar karnnaa likh lai jaaho.

Aapay beej aapay hee khaaho. Naanak hukamee aavaho jaaho. [20]

When the hands and the feet and the body are dirty, water can wash away the dirt.

When the clothes are soiled and stained by urine, soap can wash them clean.

But when the intellect is stained and polluted by sin, it can only be cleansed by the love of the Name.

Virtue and vice do not come by mere words; actions repeated, over and over again, are engraved on the soul.

You shall harvest what you plant.

O Nanak, by the Hukam of the Divine Command, we come and go in reincarnation.
