Benti Chaupai

Benti Chaupai is one of the daily banis (Sikh prayers) prescribed by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, to help Sikhs raise their consciousness and bring balance into their lives. Benti Chaupai was written by Guru Gobind Singh. Most Sikhs recite Benti Chaupai in the morning. Benti Chaupai is also contained in full in Rehras Sahib, the Sikh evening bani (prayer).

Like the other banis of Guru Gobind Singh, it appears in the Dasam Granth.

This bani corresponds to the water element or tattva.

Benti Chaupai is Guru Gobind Singh’s personal prayer for protection. It takes care of everything from beginning to end.

Benti Chaupai Sahib opens with the following verses:

O Lord, protect me with Your Hand, thus my heart’s desire be fulfilled. May my mind ever seek the refuge of Your Feet, and You sustain me as Your very Own.(1)

Lord! destroy all my enemies [diseased passions, instincts, impulses, evil thoughts, etc.] and protect me with Your Hand. Thus make my house-hold [mind], servants and followers [intellect and varied other organs]] rest in peace. (2)
