One of the key compositions found in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib is the bani Sukhmani Sahib composed by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru. Sukhmani Sahib appears on Ang (page) 242 – 296 of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib.

This bani (prayer) is divided into 24 sections or Ashtapadis, each of which contains eight paurees (stanzas).

Sukhmani Sahib is commonly translated as “Song of Peace,” and many Sikhs recite Sukhmani Sahib daily and experience its soothing and consoling effects on the mind and heart.

The main themes in Sukhmani Sahib include but are not limited to Divine immanence, Divine compassion, the abundance of grace, the succor found in the Guru’s hand, the value of devotion and the Sadha Sangat (company of the holy) and the importance of humility.

Guru Arjan enjoyed constant communication with the Divine, and poured his very spirit, which was the essence of peace itself, into this beautiful bani. This bani has great significance in the Sikh way of life, and is considered a treasure of happiness, peace and pleasure among Sikhs.
