The “Shashara” (the mind) releases 1,000 thoughts per wink of the eye. Humans cannot think that fast. In Sikh Dharma, we want to go beyond the monkey mind. Sikhs believe that when we allow the mind to control us, it keeps us in a dream state. Kundalini Yoga can bring this dream world to an end. It can bring the real world to be.
Learning to master the mind is a foundational step on the spiritual path. The mind was given to the human as a gift to serve us, but instead many humans allow it to control them. In Kundalini Yoga, the ability to direct the mind to the zero point is known as “Pratayahara.” One who has mastered pratyahara is one whose mind can become zero on demand. Pratayahara is a most important, beloved aspect of human science. It can be a cure for everything mental, physical, spiritual and beyond the spirit.
The mind is constantly playing a game. If “I” the Ego says “Shut up,” and the mind shuts up right there and then, that is a state of Pratayahara . In that act, one has found everything. People say to get rid of the ego, but in actuality the goal is simply to utilize the ego to control the mind. Normally the ego is the slave of the monkey mind, and that is a pitfall of life. Until one can bring the mental scale of thought to zero, the still point, or Shuniya, one cannot start in any direction. It is the criss-cross of all the directions of the mental thoughts that makes a person confused. Over-thinking can result in all kinds of phobias, neuroses, weaknesses and depressions.
Practicing Kundalini Yoga can give one the inner vitality to deal with the harshness of the circumstances of the time and space that challenge and confront us. Inner vitality comes from daily rising in the ambrosial hours to practice yoga and meditation. One can support inner depth by doing Sadhana and practicing Kundalini Yoga. This technology, when practiced with love and devotion, offers support to go through anything in life, and can bestow healing and elevation upon practitioners.
It is the Guru which unites us to the Infinite through the Shabad, through the sound current, through the meditation on the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. But it is Kundalini Yoga that can prepare those on the Sikh Dharma path to be able to hear that sound current. Kundalini Yoga can create a state of mystical union with the Divine, and ultimately pave the way for a permanent transformation by the sacred sound current of the Shabad Guru.
