Bhagat Singh Bedi of Sikhi Art
A self-taught artist and a student of science, Bhagat Singh Bedi, was born in Ludhiana, and moved to Canada when he was very young. After he moved to Canada, he immediately got involved in Gurudwara activities, and Gurmat camps. In the Gurudwara, Bhagat would read the many blood filled pages of Sikh history (packed in thin paperbacks), and became interested in Sikh history and philosophy.
At the Gurudwara, he was asked to paint some of those pages by the principal of the academy. Without prior training, the young boy got to work. He brought home many of the paperbacks he read, and started to mimic the historical works published in them; works of Sikh artists like Sobha Singh, Kirpal Singh, Devender Singh and Mehar Singh. G.S. Sohan Singh
Artist G.S. Sohan Singh was born in August 1914. His interest in art was inherited from his talented artist father S. Gian Singh” Naqqash”, Fresco Artist of The Golden Temple, Amritsar. In 1929, he joined the Art Company of S.Hari Singh, and in 1931 after visiting Delhi and Bombay and The port of Calcutta, he came back Amritsar where he accompanied his father’s work at Bazaar Sodhian. The Artist’s father had by that time retired from his service in the Golden Temple Amritsar and both father and son started painting religious themes, preparing charts for students as well as framing pictures.
G.S. Sohan Singh had a spiritual bent of mind since his childhood. There is long list of paintings made by him of various subjects such as Sikh Gurus, Sikh Generals and warriors, Gurudwaras, Saints, God-Godesses, Historical, Cultural and Monuments.
As a befitting tribute to the great artist, late Sardar G.S. Sohan Singh, a memorial trust was formulated in his name for the preservation and presentation of the artist’s major contribution to the cultural ethos of India with particular reference to Punjab.(View a full biography here.)
