One of the special additions to this year’s Guru Ram Das Guru Prasad Yatra is visiting Patiala, a city whose history, artistic traditions, and musical heritage offer another window into the richness of Punjab.
As we travel through the land blessed by the footsteps of the Gurus, Patiala invites us to experience a different dimension of Punjab’s living culture. Here, history is not confined to museums or monuments. It continues to live through music, craftsmanship, community, and traditions that have been lovingly preserved across generations.
Sheesh Mahal and the Legacy of Punjab
During our visit, we will explore Sheesh Mahal, the historic palace of the Maharajas of Patiala. Beyond its architectural beauty, it offers a glimpse into a chapter of Punjab’s history that helped shape the cultural life of the region.
As pilgrims, these visits help us appreciate the diverse influences and traditions that form part of Punjab’s larger story and provide a deeper understanding of the land that nurtured the Sikh faith.
A Land Shaped by Music
Punjab has long been a land of sacred song. The Gurus themselves revealed the teachings of Gurbani through music, and the tradition of singing the Divine Word remains at the very heart of Sikh spiritual practice.
Patiala has played an important role in Punjab’s musical heritage, nurturing generations of musicians and contributing to traditions that continue to inspire both classical and devotional music today. Our visit offers an opportunity to appreciate the broader musical culture that surrounds and supports the practice of Shabad Kirtan.
Kirtan at the Gurdwara of Bhai Surjit Singh Ji
A particularly meaningful part of our visit will be the opportunity to participate in kirtan at the gurdwara of Bhai Surjit Singh Ji.
Moments like these remind us that the purpose of a yatra is not simply to see new places, but to deepen our connection with the Guru. Gathering in sangat, singing Gurbani together, and sharing in the spirit of devotion allows us to experience Punjab not as visitors, but as participants in a living spiritual tradition.
The Living Art of Phulkari
We will also have the opportunity to learn about Phulkari, one of Punjab’s most cherished artistic traditions.
For generations, Phulkari has been more than an art form. It has been an expression of love, devotion, creativity, and community. Encountering this living tradition reminds us that culture is not only inherited from the past but continually renewed through the hands and hearts of those who preserve it. (Below is Yogi Bhajan in one of his many Phulkari robes).
Part of a Larger Journey
Our visit to Patiala is one thread in a much larger tapestry of experiences throughout the yatra. Along the way, we will bow at sacred historical sites, participate in seva during Guru Ram Das Ji’s Gurpurab celebrations in Amritsar, and study the sacred traditions of Shabad Kirtan with Kirit Singh during our stay in Anandpur Sahib.
Together, these experiences invite us to learn not only with our minds, but with our hearts. Through pilgrimage, sangat, seva, and Shabad, we are offered an opportunity to draw closer to the Guru’s presence and to experience the spirit of Punjab in a deeper and more personal way.
