“Hukam,” or “Hukamnama” is usually translated to mean “Divine Command” or “Divine Order.” The Hukam is a randomly-selected reading of a section of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. It is seen as an instruction from the Divine.

A Hukam is usually taken each day, but it can be taken whenever guidance is needed. Each Sikh Gurdwara service is concluded by taking a Hukam, which speaks to the whole assembled congregation.

Sikhs around the world seek the guidance of their Guru through the technology of the Hukam, feeling the wisdom of the Guru penetrate as the words are read aloud. These words from the Guru can address global issues as well the most personal.
