The Bara Maha

What is the “Bara Maha,” and who wrote it?

Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru, composed the Bani Bara Maha, which is included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The Bara Maha poetically describes how nature changes its course, and affects the emotions during the twelve months of the year.

Similarly, Guru Arjan Dev Ji also wrote a Bara Maha. Every year on the first day of the Indian month of Baramah, this is read from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib by Sikhs, either at their homes or in Gurdwaras. It is a beautiful poem of God’s love. In these poems, the Gurus have used the imagery of a woman separated from her beloved, and her deep longing for reunion, as a simile for the soul’s longing for merger with the Infinite.
