Gurugaddi Day is a significant occasion in the Sikh Dharma path that marks the enthronement, or Gurugaddi, of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal and only Guru. This event signifies the passing of spiritual leadership from the living human Gurus to the sacred Shabad Guru, marking a profound moment in Sikh history.

The Transition to the Siri Guru Granth Sahib

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and final human Guru of the Sikhs, declared that after him, there would be no more living Gurus. Instead, the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, would serve as the eternal Guru. Based on the power of Naad or sound current and composed of hymns and teachings from Sikh Gurus and other enlightened saints, the Siri Guru Granth Sahib became the guiding light for the Sikh community, offering wisdom, spiritual guidance, and a path to connect with the Divine.

A Message of Equality and Unity

The Siri Guru Granth Sahib’s teachings are timeless, emphasizing core Sikh values such as equality, justice, love, and devotion to God. It includes writings from not only Sikh Gurus but also from spiritual leaders of different faiths, reflecting the Sikh principle of unity in diversity. Gurugaddi Day reminds Sikhs of the importance of these teachings and how they provide a source of guidance in their daily lives.

Celebrations

Gurugaddi Day is celebrated with great devotion in Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) worldwide. Sikhs gather for special prayers, kirtan (devotional singing), and langar (free community meals), reaffirming their faith in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. This day is a time for deep reflection on the spiritual wisdom contained within the scripture and the values that Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru, set into motion.
