Participants of the Guru Ram Das Guru Prasad Yatra will have the opportunity to join Kirit Singh for a unique experiential workshop exploring the sacred tradition of Shabad Kirtan and the foundational elements of Indian classical music that support it.
In this workshop, participants will learn ancient practices used to discover and cultivate the human voice, often regarded as the most divine of all instruments. Through guided exercises, listening, and group participation, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how sacred sound becomes a vehicle for spiritual experience.
Participants will be introduced to:
- The sacred melodic framework of Raga
- The rhythmic science of Tala
- The transmission of Shabad, the manifest sonic form of the timeless Guru
- Traditional methods of learning through the oral tradition
Participants will also experience what it means to learn through the sacred oral tradition, through which priceless wisdom has been passed from teacher to student across countless generations. This way of learning conveys a subtlety, depth, and direct experience that cannot be fully communicated through books alone.
Whether you are completely new to Gurbani Kirtan or have been practicing for many years, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to deepen your relationship with sacred music and experience the living tradition of Shabad Kirtan.
We welcome you to join the Guru Ram Das Guru Prasad Yatra which takes place October 21 – November 3, 2026.
About Kirit Singh
Kirit Singh has been a student of Shabad Kirtan and Hindustani music since his teen years. He studied the art of kirtan with two eminent musicians of the Namdhari kirtan tradition, the late Ustad Gurdev Singh and the late Ustad Harbhajan Singh. Both were custodians of musical traditions and compositions passed down through generations from the master rababi musicians of Amritsar prior to the Partition of 1947.
As part of his PhD research on music in pre-Partition Punjab, Kirit co-produced a documentary about the rababis of Lahore, Pakistan, a community of musicians who were among the original custodians of the Gurus’ musical tradition and who greatly influenced his understanding of Shabad Kirtan.
In his own musical journey, Kirit has specialized in the ancient vocal tradition of Dhrupad, studying in the traditional guru-shishya parampara under the guidance of renowned vocalist Pandit Uday Bhawalkar since 2013. He teaches both Dhrupad and Shabad Kirtan and has performed internationally at acclaimed venues around the world.
