Aad Guray Nameh

aad guray nameh

This mantra is in Sukhmani Sahib, which was written by Guru Arjan Dev Ji. It is a mantra of protection and is recited to invoke the protective energy of the universe.  Siri Singh Sahib, Yogi Bhajan taught that this mantra should always be chanted 3 times in a row.  This mantra is also chanted directly following the Adi Mantra, when tuning in to a Kundalini Yoga class.

Aad Guray Nameh
Jugaad Guray Nameh
Sat Guray Nameh
Siri Guroo Dayvay Nameh

I bow to the Primal Wisdom
I bow to the Wisdom of all the ages
I bow to the True Wisdom
I bow to the Great Invisible Wisdom

When you cannot be protected, this mantra shall protect you. When things stop, and won’t move, this makes them move in your direction.

~ Yogi Bhajan

Yogi Bhajan’s Advice for Drivers

“When you put the key in the car and you start it, you have started. Give yourself 11 feet by chanting first:

Aad guray nameh

Jugad guray nameh

Sat guray nameh

Siri guru dayv-eh nameh.

Wahe Guru ji ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru ji ki Fateh!

(I bow to the Primal Wisdom, I bow to the Wisdom of all the ages, I bow to the True Wisdom, I bow to the great invisible Wisdom. My purity belongs to God, all victory is God’s.)

Then start, right?

If you take a moving car and measure the distance created by the period you chant, over time it is 11 feet.

Kaal means time. Desh means space. The law is, if time and space—kaal and desh—don’t meet, things can’t happen. Good and bad.  You give yourself 11 feet of distance. You are 11 feet short.”

~From I Am a Woman, p. 55

Aad Guray Namey is also known as the Mangala Charan Mantra

Aad guray nameh is in my own opinion one of the best mantras that can be used in any meditation or yoga class in group or private lessons . I was taught this mantra from my meditation teacher when I was getting a 50 hr certificate after obtaining my 200 hr yoga certificate . I still use it today in my own practice and private sessions . It is a great path to selfless service by the power of thinking about others that may need help or prayer while also being used in family and personal aspects of ones life .
