The Subtle Body is your greatest friend and ally, as it can immediately decipher the surroundings and let you know the most protected path of action.
A strong subtle body gives you the ability to walk into a room and intuitively know what’s going on around you. You are focused, visionary, and kind. The key phrase for the subtle body is “mastery or mystery.” To have mastery means to be able to master situations easily. On the flip side, a weak subtle body = “mystery” – it means you can lack the subtle perception to pick up where people are really coming from; be easily misled; naïve. You may feel lost, disillusioned, or angry. Without mastery, life appears as a mystery.
The Ninth Body & the Ninth Guru
(as taught by Yogi Bhajan)
- The Subtle Body is the Ninth Body.
- The Ninth Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, is associated with the Subtle Body.
The Subtle Body is the vehicle of the Soul:
“Without the Subtle Body, the Soul cannot move. At the time of death, eight bodies fall away, but the Soul travels with the Subtle Body.”
- Just as the Subtle Body carries the Soul beyond the physical, Guru Tegh Bahadur carried the entire Sikh community — and humanity — beyond fear and oppression through his sacrifice.
The Subtle Body as the source of intuition and refined perception:
“With a developed Subtle Body, you can see beyond appearances, under the skin of everything, and know what is true.”
Relating this to Guru Tegh Bahadur, Yogi Bhajan taught that the Guru embodied fearlessness and subtle mastery:
“Guru Tegh Bahadur was subtle, silent, fearless — he stood in intuitive strength where others could not. He was the very embodiment of the Subtle Body.”
Spiritual Strengths
Silence & Depth: Guru Tegh Bahadur spent much of his life in meditation, embodying the stillness of the Subtle Body.
Fearlessness: The Subtle Body, when strong, gives calm mastery and the courage to act beyond fear. Guru Tegh Bahadur is remembered as Hind di Chadar — the Shield of India — who gave his life to protect the freedom of others.
Companion of the Soul: Just as the Subtle Body carries the Soul after death, Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice carried generations forward, giving spiritual freedom for many
Refined Awareness: The Guru’s hymns (shabads) emphasize detachment, humility, and awareness of the Infinite — qualities that mirror the refinement of the Subtle Body.
Practice & Reflection
We can experience our Subtle Body through:
Daily Sadhana: Rise in Amrit Vela to refine subtle perception.
Meditation on Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Shabads: Especially hymns about detachment, courage, and freedom.
Kriyas for the Subtle Body: There are many Kundalini Yoga practices which can expand your aura and strengthen the Subtle Body
Selflessness: Live selflessly and fearlessly, serving others with subtle strength, as the Guru did.
Essence
The Subtle Body (Ninth Body) = the Gift of Intuition & Spiritual Perception.
The Ninth Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur = the Embodiment of Subtlety, Silence, and Fearless Sacrifice.
Together, they teach that true mastery is not loud or forceful, but subtle, courageous, and selfless — a living compass of the soul that serves others even at the highest cost.
