In the 20th Pauree, Guru Nanak draws a beautiful comparison between our bodies and our consciousness. He tells us that when our bodies become soiled with dirt and dust and our clothes stained with urine, these can be cleaned with water and soap. Just this way, the mind also becomes stained and adulterated by negative thoughts and behavior. Nanak tells us that the only way that the mind can be cleansed of those stains is with the love of the Naam, the Word.
