Written by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, this Shabad is a part of Ashtapadi 18 of Sukhmani Sahib (the “Prayer of Peace”), a beautiful bani in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This Ashtapadi describes the grace, protection and transformative power of selfless service and meditation on the Divine name.
Raag Gauri – Guru Arjan Dev Ji – Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji – Ang 286
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜੋ ਰਹੈ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਹੈ ॥ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਕਰਿ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਜਨਾਵੈ ॥ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਦ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ਮਨੁ ਬੇਚੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਤ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੀ ॥ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਹੋਤ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥ਅਪਨੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੇਇ ॥੨॥
gur kai gireh sevak jo rahai ||
gur kee aagiaa man meh sahai ||
aapas kau kar kachh na janaavai ||
har har naam ridhai sadh dhiaavai ||
man bechai satigur kai paas ||
tis sevak ke kaaraj raas ||
sevaa karat hoi nihakaamee ||
tis kau hot paraapat suaamee ||
apanee kirapaa jis aap karei ||
naanak so sevak gur kee mat lei ||2||
That selfless servant, who lives in the Guru’s household,
is to obey the Guru’s Commands with all his mind.
He is not to call attention to himself in any way.
He is to meditate constantly within his heart on the Name of the Lord.
One who sells his mind to the True Guru
– that humble servant’s affairs are resolved.
One who performs selfless service, without thought of reward,
shall attain his Lord and Master.
He Himself grants His Grace;
O Nanak, that selfless servant lives the Guru’s Teachings. ||2||
