Japji Sahib: The Song of the Soul, 550 Years Later

Instructor: SS Atma Chanan Kaur Khalsa

This session is an invitation to explore the first 50 pages of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, and the socio-historical context at the time when Guru Nanak channeled the Song of the Soul, igniting the power of the Shabad Guru. After being submerged in the river for three days, Nanak, like Budha and Jesus, became enlightened holding the wisdom of ages. What does it mean that He chose water as the element to express His important message, “We are One,” describing the essence of one’s soul–to remember ourselves, our true Divine nature. Together, we’ll explore what the longing of the soul means in today’s context, and how Guru Nanak’s teachings shaped the foundation of Sikhism and the Guruship. Contemporary with John Calvin, how is Guru Nanak’s message revolutionary then and now? And how is His teachings different from other sages and saints in India, and beyond. We’ll also look at the structure of the Japji and its main benefits, virtues and meditations, such as Sunia (Deep Listening), Mannai (Unconditional Surrender) as well as Humility, Patience, Intuition and Grace–all needed in order to cut through the Ego and merge with God and one’s Divine Destiny.
